Battling the Summer Heat
Tips for Staying Cool and Lean Throughout the Summer
Exercise during the summer can be a lot fun. The weather’s warm, the sun’s shining and everybody’s outside enjoying the season. But, if you’re not careful and don’t take the necessary precautions you could be putting yourself at risk. In order to ensure you make the most out of your outside exercise routine, follow these simple tips:
- Water, Water, Water: When you’re outside in the warm weather, your body releases sweat to help keep you cool. Because of this, it’s important to drink water before, during and after your workout. You can also try the new no-calorie flavored water to keep your body hydrated. And, if you are a serious athlete, you may want to try one of the available sports drinks to help replace lost electrolytes.
- Avoid the Peak Hours: You may find it easier to get a good workout early in the morning or in the late evening when the sun’s not as intense. Avoid exercising in the middle of the day, when the sun is at its peak.
- Dress Smart: Try wearing light-colored clothing that will reflect the sunlight. Also, look for clothing that allows more air to circulate and aids in absorbing moisture.
- Take a Dip: If you decide to exercise outside, why not head to the local pool afterwards and go for a swim? Plus, swimming is a great exercise in itself – as it works virtually every part of your body.
- Wear Sunscreen: It’s important to protect your skin when you exercise outside. Apply sunscreen 30 minutes before you engage in an activity outdoors. And, don’t forget to reapply every couple of hours. (Be sure to look for sunscreen that is waterproof!) Getting a sunburn is no fun and will certainly make exercising more difficult!
Take advantage of the Summer and spend some quality time outdoors burning calories. If you are careful and treat your body well you can get a great workout and still enjoy the season! |
