Back to Let's Get Physical
Make Exercise Fit Your Personality
Do
you dread the thought of exercise in the morning or even after you get
home from work? If that's the case, it may be that the activity or exercise
doesn't fit your personality. It's critical that you enjoy exercise -
otherwise it won't become a lifestyle change, just a temporary fix to
help you lose those extra pounds. But if you don't want the pounds packing
back on, you'll need to find something that you enjoy and fits your personal
needs and lifestyle.
If you are competitive
or enjoy sports:
Participate in a recreational league near your home. Join a softball,
basketball, tennis, baseball or swim team. For some added activity and
fun on the weekend, get a group together for golf or touch football.
If you are "Type
A" or a highly stressed individual:
Go for a workout that allows you to get rid of that aggression. Sign up
for tai chi or other martial arts. Take a self-defense or boxing class.
Rent a kickboxing or Tae Bo video. Consider, putting a punching bag (small
or large) in your garage for days when you really need a stress reliever.
If you are more
introverted or need time alone:
Consider joining a yoga or pilates class (or rent a video, which will
enable you to exercise in the privacy of your home). Or, if you enjoy
running or walking, head out on the open road to collect your thoughts.
If you are extroverted
and like to be active with a buddy:
Find a time to go inline skating, hiking, walking, cycling or running.
Or, how about trying something new such as a dance class. You'll learn
a few new steps and burn off calories!
If you have problems
with your joints, back, etc.:
Look for low-impact activity. Since water provides resistance yet is also
easy on joints, consider taking the plunge in the nearest pool. There
are many types of aqua aerobics classes, or swim some laps on your own.
Each person is unique
and has their own personality, so it's natural that different activities
are enjoyable for different types of people. The important thing is that
you find something you like and just do it!
Note: Be sure to check with your doctor before beginning
any new exercise program.
